How to Protect Yourself During a Move

Do your research. Proper preparation can help you steer clear many of the issues that can turn your move into a nightmare, and that starts with doing some proper research. It is always best to ask for a referral rather than using an unknown company. And not just anyone is qualified to give a referral, a friend may have had a good experience with a company but that does not necessarily mean that you will.

Speak to estate agents, as the general consensus among moving professionals is that word of mouth is the best way to find a good removals company. Remember that your estate agent wants to make sure that your house move is a good one – it reflects on them.

There is also the internet. There are many chat rooms out there that will give you the general consensus on any removals company you may be thinking of using. Also visit the testimonials pages of your chosen removals companies, it all helps when you're trying to make that final decision. Remember, it's not all based on cost – choosing a company based purely on cost may end up costing you more (financially and emotionally) in the long run.

Obtain estimates and speak to the company in person. Nothing can beat a face to face chat with a company you may be entering into a contract with, once you're happy with a companies background meeting them in person is something worth doing before you sign on the dotted line.

There are also organsations that will verify the credibility and professionalism of a removals company. Are they a member of websites such as ‘checkatrade' – if they are you will be able to get unbiased reviews. Do they belong to the British Association of Removers (BAR) – if so you will have a guarantee of professionalism and a level of protection should something go wrong.

Finally it's always worth having a contingency plan. No matter how well you are prepared, the unexpected still can happen. What if the truck doesn't show up on time? Are you prepared to live without your things for a few days, or longer? Make sure you pack a bag of essentials you can have with you while the rest of your stuff is stuck on the truck.

With this in mind you should always consider you insurance cover – are you fully covered? You may have cover through your house insurance, but check with your insurance company first, don't presume or leave it to chance. Some companies offer varying levels of insurance cover – make sure you are aware of what you are actually covered for before the move and before it's too late.
